The idea would be that this would make it easy to render NOT using
OpenGL. And flip back and forth between the two, like say when going
fullscreen.

For a start, I'd really like the giant map window to NOT cover up the 3D
view, and be an independent window. Rendering it with Cairo would make
it easy to render without OpenGL.

But given that desktop-wide OpenGL based rendering seems to be the
future, maybe we don't need to bother. Just open up another OpenGL
window.
