I'm still playing catch up so this may have already been mentioned, but I

The region hosts you see in the diagram can probably be anything, a single
host, a cluster, whatever.. For a start there will probably be the
simulators we know but later on people could experiment with more complex
setups (and I guess at least folks like Intel, IBM or Sun will definitely
want to use their technology which might support this).

As I see it those boxes are just there for showing where interfaces need to
be defined.
