On the subject of refactoring the GUI, the last time this came up  
there was a suggestion that teh LL GIO be made a portable toolkit  
rather than using a portable OpenGL toolkit for the GUI. After  
looking at the LL GUI code, I believe that it would probably be  
better to throw Linden Labs support behind one of the existing OpenGL  
GUI toolkits. It's pretty specialized and missing a lot of basic  
functionality like automatically cropping or wrapping text in widgets...
