You're making an assumption that the person doing this manually obtuse
edit process will:
 - always have perfect dexterity manipulating this fragile selection state
 - won't get bumped or disturbed by someone when the linkset is in the
fragile selection state
 - doesn't have pets or children or any other local distraction that
might cause the fragile selection state to accidently become fully
deselected.

Just because you can do something the ridiculously delicate and
ultra-geekish without handholding via a proper user interface, doesn't
mean that the rest of us should have to suffer right along with you
doing things this way.
