Cool, i've worked around it for 5 minutes anyway.
I've also noticed there don't seem to be any default environmental
settings in the tarballs. My windlight world is very very dark, and
there are no presets for sky or water. In fact in
app_settings/windlight there is one file but on an official linden
release there is a whole bunch of stuff which if i copy to my build
makes everything ok.
