So if you accidently close the chat tab you are no longer subscribe to the chat session? The chatterbox UI can get cluttered enough without having to keep group tabs open for every group you might want to receive group chat on, and as the tabs are intermingled with private im tabs, closing them accidently would be extremely easy.

What I would argue need (as has been mentioned) is a new check box in the group info similar to the current "Receive Group Notices" checkbox, called something like "Auto-accept Group IMs".

If checked the viewer would behave as per the current viewer (i.e. automatically join a group IM session if someone sends a message).
If unchecked you only get group IMs if you explicitly have the group chat tab open.
