My got felling is that that joining the channel at login, might be a 
working db solution. However my knowledge of the details in this 
implementation is limited especially server side and db.

I don't care about passive listener, to choose what groups you get IM's 
from, (I like the opt-out solution, why join a group if you don't like 
the chat?)
