I think we had a more knotty problem than that. A tcmalloc built
against the same version of glibc as everything else on the system
never seemed to exhibit any problems for us. Since we ship a prebuilt
binary of Second Life and were bundling that with tcmalloc, and it
runs under who knows what configuration of libraries on people's
machines, we received many reports of problems that we could never
pinpoint, or often even get enough information to be able to figure
out what the reporter's configuration might be.

"Works on my machine" is unfortunately not good enough :-(
