If you use a raw format that's efficiently decoded by the client,
with a header containing metadata, in an undocumented format with an
undocumented size, then you'll have as much obscurity as you have now
in a format that is perhaps bulkier but certainly will consume less
CPU time to extract.
And if you store the data by UUID or by a simple collision-free
permutation of the UUID rather than going through VFS it should be
possible to expand the texture cache on disk significantly.
How far to go for obscurity? Only so far as it makes it easier to use
GLintercept than to hack the cache. :)
