GTK+ 2.4 had some pretty major buffer overflow vulnerabilities (to do 
with image processing, AFAIK not exploitable via SL since it uses OpenGL 
to handle imges), however I don't think there's an active dist which 
still includes it.

Out of curiosity, what improvements are planned?
