Yup, pre-scaling the white noise down before filtering solved that.

Here's some samples, the clicking and abruptness seems to be most  
consistent when spinning.

At other times it's variable and dependent on what else is going on  
at the same time, in this recording flying up and down it only does  
it a couple of times and quite lightly, but every time I got an  
online notification it seemed to get much worse for a while before  
and after.
