Should we add a note to the wiki then? The note should explain that if
you want to build the viewer yourself, you also will have to solve this
issue on your own. This may be easy for most developers that rebuild the
viewer, but it may not be trivial for everybody; example - I am not a
developer and I am not very skilled about handling sources, libraries,
patches, compilator versions and such. However, sometimes I build the
SL viewer on my own, and I usually succeed in that. I can do that
because of the wiki page instructions. I do this mainly for two reasons:
1. as http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Get_source_and_compile states,
''Even if you don't plan to develop, just the act of downloading
and compiling can uncover problems''
2. little trivial patches and workarounds - example:
http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-2085 (still unassigned)
-> since months, on Linux you can't hide the UI if you don't modify
a line in llviewermenu.cpp and then recompile from sources
I agree with you that both these reasons are 'not a big problem' when
compared to other viewer issues. However I'd be glad if you/someone
could resume the 'slviewer, gcc-4.3 and scons >= 0.98' issue to a
phrase/paragraph, so that I can add it to the wiki page. At least,
lame people like me will be warned of this issue before we try
building the viewer. I would write the note myself but I actually
can't provide a precise answer in correct technical english terms.
