Microsoft is making it increasingly difficult to download updates for  
Windows 2000, including SP4.

You might be surprised. I use Windows 2000. I will continue to use  
Windows 2000 until Microsoft removes the suicide pill from later  
versions of Windows. There are very few core differences between 2000  
and XP. XP was basically a cosmetic change accompanied by extra  
bundled software.

I don't see why not, if they are portable and don't cause problems  
for later versions.

Well, I still run SL on my Mac mini, now and then, and that's still  
running Panther.
