I don't think there would be any need to render the avatar partially  
transparent. In fact it would be acceptable to simply cull the mesh  
completely in the areas that are 100% transparent, and ignore the  
layer otherwise. This would be like "disabling rendering the avatar  
mesh" but only for the limbs or portions thereof that are being hidden.
