I'm afraid that there are several misconception regarding MPEG-V on
this list.

First, MPEG-V is not MPEG 5. V is the vee for Virtual world.

Second, MPEG is not just a movie (audio/vidio) file format, recently.

Yes, MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 are, and people well know about them
these days. However, MPEG-7 and MPEG-21 are different from their
predecessors. In fact, MPEG-21 is a collection of communication
scenarios and protocols covering various interactive network
applications, not necessarily related to digital movies.

I guess (just a guess; of course I may be wrong, but) MPEG-V people
are trying to define a complete protocol for the virtual world
applications, including object, avator, or land representation,
management of ownership of object, object and value (money) transfer
transaction, communication protocols between the _viewer_, _SIM_, or
_asset_servers_, something called rights management, etc. In short, I
expect everything that can be covered by AWG.

So, response like "Huh? MPEG for virtual world? Digital movie is just
a small part of Second Life." is inappropriate. You can get a better
understanding of the SC29's intention if you learn what MPEG-21
defines.

I don't know anything on this particular MPEG-V activities, but I know
something on SC29 (in a part of my RL job.) I recommend LL to at
least monitor the activity, because it could eventually be important
for the Second Life as a business.
