As Steven says, at that point it's a UI/Viewer issue; the person creating
the group gets a "should this group have an IM channel?" checkbox (and we
can discuss what the default is), and if there is one then when I join the
group I get to decide whether to join it or not (or maybe I don't, even,
and I just automatically join it). Works for me. :)
