This would be very interesting indeed.
 
However, I think you can only do that if the seam is in fact
a vertex between two tris.

That means that if you have, say, two cubes with intersecting
surfaces, then you'd have create more tris than before. Normally
one side of a cube exist of two triangles, if it's intersecting
with another surface that would become at least four triangles.
