Henri, this sounds very much like a French elitism to me, sorry. And
that is even though English is only my second or third language (btw, je
parle français aussi ...)
English can be equally subtle and complex as French is, if used by a
skilled speaker/writer. Translations from French to English can be
equally comical.

However, to the point of the translators - I have a Brazilian friend who
speaks no English and I speak no Portuguese, but we can communicate
quite well using one. It will certainly not do to translate Molière or
Hemingway, but it beats not being able to communicate at all.
