I don't think it reasonable for LL to tip toe around but then have to allow
the community to frank and harsh. However it's evident to me that everyone
needs thicker skin starting with LL developers. I think my thoughts on this
topic are summed up by Dave Worthington's story in his opening sentence in
the Nov 15th issue of SD Times
http://www2.sdtimes.com/pdf/SDTimesBackIssues/sdtimes186.pdf. He states:
"One of the pitfalls of being
open is that one has to be willing
to accept criticism, sometimes
savage and unsparing."
While he was talking about Microsoft's foray into open source licensing, I
think there are enough similarities (at least right now) between LL and MS
that everyone should read it.
I'm not sure what anyone at LL is thinking when they come across as
defensive and protective. Everyone is on this list for a reason and is a
tiny subset of the larger SL community that obviously thinks that they have
something to contribute to the betterment of their own (and shock of all
shocks) other's SL experience. Yes, some are "sometimes savage and
unsparing" but I have to think that comes from frustration. I don't know
anyone here that has a personal vendetta against LL (well ok maybe one but I
digress).
I think a really great exercise for LL would be to obtain everyone's real
life resume's and see that the community collectively has greater and more
diverse experience than their brightest developers will ever be or have. BTW
that is not a criticism of anyone of any sort at LL and if that statement
offends anyone then read my second sentence about thicker skin. It's simply
a factor of the economy of scale. So LL can either tap into that diverse
experience or use the list to report status. Really as the architect it is
their choice as I pointed out in my last email. However, I hate trying to
guess what it is going to be. In the last case of reporting status the
developer is obviously confused as well as to his role.
It boils down to this for me: If LL doesn't like what the community is
saying, they should figure out with is wrong and fix it.
Cheers,
Jon
