We have not seen a mandatory update for quite a while...looks like SL is
settling down :)

As I understand this

http://blog.secondlife.com/2006/12/21/a-big-change-youll-barely-notice/#more-632
"The end of this path is a day when we can update the grid, viewers and
simulators, in pieces, without ever taking it down."

at least the GOAL seems to be to get rid of mandatory updates.

And if "free clients" will lead to "free servers", then server-updates
will influence the clients just as much as the next apache-release will
affect firefox.

But hey, this is just the first day of an exciting new era of SL!
I quess for these things we might need to wait how things will go.

As a sidenote, I just redicovered this quote from Cory Linden:
http://blog.secondlife.com/2006/12/20/town-hall-with-cory-introductory-transcript/
"Viewer scaling, which was also asked about in the SL 2.0 context, is an
ongoing process. We don’t currently have the development resources to
split off a team to start building a new client – although if anyone has
a 10 to 20 person development team with experience in high-performance
OpenGL who would like to talk, please email me!"

Not that I would be one of the "OpenGL-experienced-developer". I will
contribute merely by "checking if things will compile on my setup"...
but the statement is interesting, now that the Client has been GPL'd.

Yours,
