It has already been taken into consideration. Please search the Intel 
website for its terascale design, and you'll notice special 
functionality cores among the general programmable cores.

As for the previous question about LOD, we could use 4 bits from the 
alpha channel to map significant points for LOD.  MIP maps are about 8 
levels, so 4 bits can provide similar feature. I little remesh can be 
done. That's enough to show that the extra load overhead for billboard 
(or regular mip maps) are not needed for sculpties.
