[sldev] AWG - Scope (Future SL Architecture versus Multiworld
Interoperability)

(Not sure if this is the most appropriate place to post this)
I realised listening to the recent Dr Dobbs interview of Ginsu Linden and Zha Ewry the reason for part of the confusion I had over the purpose of the AWG work.
Originally, I thought the AWG was attempting to develop a new architecture for SL focused on better scalability and opening up the possibility of people running their own SL sims.
However, in some in world discussions on the AW Group there was a strong leaning (from the IBMers) that the emphasis was on the contractural APIs needed to enable mutliple VW to interoperate and some of the things people were trying to raise (such as virtualisation) were really implementation issues and out of scope.
Listening to the Dr Dobbs interview, I realised that multi-VW interoperability was the main motivation behind the new IBM/LL relation, however I'm still not convinced that that is the primary motivation behind a lot of the AWG activities.
To me - standardisation for multi-VW interoperability and a new scalable architecture for SL are distinct albeit inter-related activities. It may be appropriate for the AWG to work on both (or at least subgroups of the AWG), but I do think it important to distinguish between these two activities rather than lump them together.
Does anyone else feel that way?
Matthew
