Protocol handlers, as implemented in Windows and OS X, are a well  
known security hole. They are routinely filtered and blocked by  
browsers and plugins by people attempting to deal with this problem.  
Some of the plugins are brain-dead, and only allow a fixed list of  
protocol handlers and are not even configurable by the user.  
Depending on them is going to make people think "Second Life doesn't  
work".
